As of September 7, citizens of the USA are still not allowed to enter Italy for tourism. There are exceptions to these covid-19 restrictions for specific reasons including , work, health or study, absolute urgency, and return to home or residence.
The restrictions do NOT apply to Italian/EU/Schengen citizens and their family members or to people who hold residence permits in Italy and their family members. People meeting these criteria are allowed to enter Italy without specific reasons. In this new update, now partners of citizens and residents of Italy may enter the country as well, this means significant others, boyfriends, girlfriends, fiances, etc.
Everyone travelling from the USA, including the people without restrictions, are subject to a mandatory two week quarantine, reporting of a self-declaration form, testing and monitoring by the National Health System. The self-declaration form is found online at www.salute.gov.it or will be provided at most airports. It must be filled out and carried with you at all times. Once you arrive at the airport in Italy, you must take private transportation to your lodging where you will begin your two week quarantine period. You must call the Italian National Health System to report that you’ve arrived (numbers are found on the www.salute.gov.it website.
Depending on the region you are in, you may need to get a covid-19 test. This begins with the serological test for 15 Euros and must be performed at an authorized lab with a prescription from a physician. If this test is positive, a nasal swab test performed by the National Health System at no cost to the person being tested.
If you must visit Italy at this time, be sure to follow all of the procedures the government mandates, and be sure to be responsible so as not to spread a possible covid-19 infection.
